Alleged explosion, fire destroys Cedar Rapids garage

Mar. 4, 2016 2:05 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - No one was injured when a garage exploded in southeast Cedar Rapids Friday morning.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department was called to 1025 38th St. SE at 11:29 a.m. Friday for a possible explosion. Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said a neighbor told firefighters they heard an explosion, then noticed their neighbor's detached, single stall garage was on fire. They knocked on their neighbor's door and told them their garage was on fire.
Buelow said the garage was destroyed in the alleged explosion and resulting fire. Siding on the house was pulled away so that crews could ensure the fire had not spread to the residence.
There was no vehicle in the garage, but it did contain various garden equipment and tools, Buelow said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
