CEDAR RAPIDS - One of the drivers in a fatal crash Wednesday night was driving in the wrong direction, police said Thursday.
Cedar Rapids police and rescue personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly after 7 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and L Street SW. Police said one driver involved in the head-on collision, 53-year-old Jonathan Dale of Mount Vernon, died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, Jennifer Wertz, 59, and her passenger, 62-year-old Thomas Wertz, both of Cedar Rapids, suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment.
Police determined Dale was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Diagonal Drive when he collided with Wertz at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and L Street.
The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Police said all victims were wearing their seat belts.
