An unfortunate episode happened at the Metro Youth Football Association Championship Under the Lights 7-on-7 Tournament held in Cedar Rapids. One father began running after the coach when the father and his son were told they were too old to play in the tournament.

Today’s youth are joining club and/or travel teams at earlier ages. Kids are playing more than one sport in a season, or at least in a year. Many are overscheduled. Consequently, there has been a drop in enrollment in rec sports.

Youth sports away from city recreation programs have become more time intensive and expensive. But what to do? If your son or daughter wants to participate at a higher level of sports, can you deny them the opportunity? That decision needs to be determined by what is best for your family.

Statistics show girls drop out of sports at higher rates than boys as they transition into the teenage years. The trend is a loss for girls and society overall because the loss of numbers deprives us of leadership and healthy habits that sports help cultivate.

When compared to girls who do not play sports, female high school athletes are 14 percent more likely to believe they are smart enough for their dream career, 11 percent are more likely to say they are happy the way they are, and 16 percent are less likely to want to change their appearance.
