Just over 24 hours after the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission voted to grant a gaming license to build a planned $275 million casino and entertainment center near downtown Cedar Rapids, the Cedar Rapids Development Group broke ground on the new facility Friday. The celebration, however, may be premature.

Three developers have proposed mixed-use projects on the property. All would include commercial space and housing. One proposal also would include an entertainment venue and a museum that celebrates storytelling.

Oliver Weilein won the Iowa City Council special election primary Tuesday with 69 percent of the votes cast in District C. Ross Nusser finished second with 27 percent of the vote.

CRANDIC told city and county leaders in Johnson County it will not allow use of its rail line for passenger transit at this time.

Project will add two new baseball diamonds to the park, as soon as fall 2026.

North Liberty plans to build a roundabout at an intersection on Forevergreen Road west of Interstate 380, and Coralville will be responsible for continuation of Jasper Avenue south of the roundabout.

The store, which is scheduled to open in 2028, is expected to bring 200 jobs to the area.

Remaining candidates address questions about how they would approach state, federal policies that affect Iowa City residents.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors wants to compare repair costs with the cost of closing the jail and housing inmates and employees in other facilities.

Only residents of Iowa City’s District C are eligible to vote in the primary on Feb. 4, but all city residents can vote in the general election, which will be March 4. District C includes downtown Iowa City and north-central Iowa City.

County bought the property for $1.7 million to serve as affordable housing.

The Iowa City Council’s District C seat is vacant after Andrew Dunn’s resignation took effect Jan. 1. Three people have filed to run for the office.
