Five area Iowa high school girls’ basketball games to watch Saturday in Class 3A quarterfinals and Class 2A regional first-round games.

Alburnett has climbed to the top of the Class 1A boys’ wrestling dual rankings. The Pirates were fourth at the 2023 state duals and will host regional duals again this season. The Wamac Conference has seven teams in the field with No. 2 Mount Vernon, West Delaware and Indpendence hosting 2A regional duals. Linn-Mar is the lone Gazette-area host in 3A.

Here is The Gazette’s first 2023-24 installment of area high school boys’ wrestling individual rankings.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the first installment of its dual rankings for all classes. The poll is used to determined regional dual qualifiers and are considered in pairings. Eight regional dual champions advance to the State Duals tournament Feb. 3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

West Delaware Coach had an interesting analogy to describe his team. They resemble farm dogs chasing passing cars, trying to run down their best performances. The Hawks won the South Winn Invitational and hits a challenging stretch of duals this week.

There have been holiday races, backyard football games and living room scraps. Mikey Ryan honed his competitive edge at home as the youngest of nine athletically gifted siblings. The returning state medalist claimed the 150-pound title at the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday. The Mustangs won the team title.

Meet the 2023 Gazette all-area volleybal team. Mount Vernon’s Chloe Meester and Clear Creek Amana’s Jackie Clubb are selected as player and coach of the year.

Here are eight Gazette-area teams to keep an eye on during the 2023-24 Iowa high school boys’ wrestling season.

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.

All-state volleyball: Mount Vernon’s Chloe Meester is an Elite selection and the Class 3A player of the year.

State cross country (Class 3A): Washington’s Micah Rees hangs with the front pack for nearly 2 miles, finishes 4th. Mount Vernon-Lisbon girls are runners-up.

Friday was a night for Iowa high school football state playoffs, so of course the neighboring towns of Lisbon, Mount Vernon and Solon were busy.

East Buchanan beat Lisbon 38-7 Friday night to advance to the Class A Iowa high school state football quarterfinals.

If it isn’t broken, don’t pass it. That’s the approach East Buchanan took in its 38-7 rout of fifth-ranked Lisbon Friday night in a Class A second-round prep football playoff game. The Buccaneers, led by “thunder and lightning” backs Tanner Thurn and Hunter Bowers, rushed for 379 yards. All their offensive yards came on the ground.
