When I hear I have to join you Iowans in kicking in to help pay roughly half of a $4.2 million settlement to end a discrimination lawsuit brought by former Hawkeye football players against the University of Iowa, that doesn’t sit well. Especially when we’ve heard over and over about the self-sufficiency of the UI’s athletic department.

Kirk Ferentz spoke candidly about the transfer portal this week at the University of Iowa’s Presidential Committee on Athletics meeting.

The former Hawkeye football players who in 2020 filed a lawsuit accusing the UI football program of racial discrimination and harassment have dropped their claims against head coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, Athletic Director Gary Barta, and former strength coach Chris Doyle.

Nearly a year after former Hawkeye football players added linebackers coach Seth Wallace to their list of defendants in a discrimination lawsuit against the University of Iowa Athletics Department, they’ve dropped all claims against him.

Iowa’s track record with previous walk-ons was again helpful as the Hawkeyes recruited many who turned down scholarship opportunities elsewhere.
