Animé is very popular, and it first originated in Japan in the early years of the 20th century.
The word itself comes from the Japanese word for “animations.” Around the world, “animé” usually refers to animations that are produced in Japan.
Animé is similar to cartoons in the way it is created — with hand drawn frames, like a flipbook, that are colored and moved through a computer to create an episode. To create a complete episode or a movie, a lot of frames have to be created to show smooth movement. A typical 20-minute episode takes around 5,000 frames.
Within animé, there is a wide range of genres, from science fiction to historical fiction. It is also made for different groups of people, or demographics, from children to adults. This is one of the key differences between animé and cartoons, since cartoons are usually targeted specifically toward kids.
Animé is often an adaptation of manga (the Japanese word for “comic books”) that also is popular in Japan and around the world.
Animé is a big part of the Japanese culture, even if the storylines in animé aren’t always about Japan itself. Although most animé is originally in Japanese, a lot of popular animé shows are dubbed into different languages to make it easier for others who don’t speak Japanese to follow. Almost all animé have subtitles in different languages as well.
