When Iowa kids don costumes to knock on their neighbors’ doors this Halloween, they’re more likely to receive one type of candy than any other.
M&M sales spike in Iowa this time of year — more than any other candy — as Iowans stock up for trick-or-treaters, according to sales data from candystore.com.
These are the top three candies in the state:
- M&M's
- Reese’s Cups
- Candy Corn
Across the country, Reese’s Cups are the bestselling Halloween candy. The candy retailer’s analysis, which looked at 14 years of sales data from the months leading up to Halloween, resulted in this cavity-inducing list:
- Reese’s Cups
- Skittles
- M&M’s
- Starburst
- Hot Tamales
- Sour Patch Kids
- Hershey Kisses
- Snickers
- Tootsie Pops
- Candy Corn

Source: CandyStore.com.Americans buy a lot of candy this time of year. They’re expected to spend $3 billion on sweets this year, according to the National Retail Federation. That’s a big increase compared to last year, when Halloween was all but canceled for lots of kids.
That means there are gobs of candy to be had this year. If you’re trick-or-treating, be sure to stay safe — scary masks that cover your mouth and nose also protect you and others — and load up your favorite sugary treats.
