Christmas is only a few days away. For the grown-ups left on your list, go with something simple, sentimental and homemade.
Presenting: salt dough ornaments.
Salt dough is easy to shape and mold, and it dries into a hardened item. It’s also easy to personalize — salt dough will preserve an imprint of a small hand print for years to come. Like play dough, it can be shaped anyway you choose. What will you create?
What you need:
- 1 cup flour
- Half cup salt
- Half cup water
- A straw
- String or ribbon
What you do:
1. Mix the flour, water and salt together. Dough should start to form. Use your hands to press and knead it together.
2. Use your hands or a rolling pin to spread out the dough. Use cookie cutters or a butter knife to cut out the shape of your ornament.
3. Place the shapes on a baking sheet. Use a straw to create a small hole where you will later thread string or ribbon. If you want to create an imprint of a hand — or paw — on the ornament, do that now.
4. Let the ornaments dry until they are very hard — in the oven at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours, or leave them out to air dry for a few days. Attach a string or ribbon.
