CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids school district has hired Brian Galusha as Metro Alternative High's new principal, effective July 1.
Galusha succeeds Carlos Grant, who has been the high school's principal since 2014. Grant is moving to a new role as the district's executive director of personalized learning and middle level education on July 1.
Galusha was an associate principal at Clinton High for six years, according to a Cedar Rapids district news release. He also served as chairman of the high school's at-risk department.
Many of Metro High's students struggle in traditional classroom settings or face other educational obstacles. About 375 students were enrolled at the alternative school in 2015, according to state data.
'It's a different kind of school,” school board Vice President Gary Anhalt said. 'It's a different kind of staff of very special, hard working people. That appointment is important.”
