Kirkwood’s Grace Zaugg displays resilience in softball while her biggest fan fights cancer to cheer her on. Her mother has been ‘Shelly Strong’ after a brain tumor was discovered in November.

The Lightning won the season-opening quadrangular and followed it with a runner-up finish behind highly-regarded Cedar Rapids Washington on Tuesday. Liberty’s Isabella Pettersen has claimed medalist honors in both meets this season.

Drew Proskovec was in search of more opportunities to compete, so he took a gamble on himself, leaving University of Iowa for Kirkwood. The move has paid dividends. He improved 3-0 this season, helping the Eagles to a doubleheader sweep over Iowa Lakes Tuesday at home.

Kirkwood’s Peyton Johnson tallied three hits with a home run and double, drove in five runs and scored twice, including the game-winning run on Sailor Hall’s double for a walk-off 9-8 victory against Iowa Lakes in the opener of a softball doubleheader.

Brennan Heesch has been a mainstay in the Solon boys’ golf lineup since he joined the program. Heesch was part of three straight Class 3A state tournament teams and will be relied on even more to help round out team scores this season.
