The Johnson County Empowerment/Early Childhood Iowa Area Board is accepting applications for School Ready Scholarships for the 2022-2023 school year. The School Ready Scholarship program can assist parents in paying for a quality preschool experience for their child. Scholarships are available for children who will be 3, 4, or 5 years of age by Sept. 15.

F.W. Kent Park in eastern Johnson County has seen a record number of visitors during the pandemic. With the park’s increased use, the county is investing $3.4 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars to replace the campground shower house and wastewater system, which will also have a positive impact on water quality in the lake.

The event will be held on June 11 at 10 a.m. Paddlers will start the race at Sturgis Ferry Park in Iowa City and will cross the finish line nine miles downriver at the Hills Campground in Hills.

Eligible Johnson County residents will have until 2 p.m. on Friday to get their applications submitted for a one-time emergency relief check of $1,400.

UAY’s biggest fundraising event, the Festival of Flowers, seeks to raise $50,000 to support programming like Spark, as well as the Young Parent Program, health education and downtown Youth Center. The event is Thursday at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Reservations cost $50 and are available online.

The organization is looking for volunteers to bolster their local food rescue operations and tackle summer produce initiatives. Volunteers transport over 40,000 lbs. of food weekly to agencies throughout Johnson County that serve food-insecure populations.

Johnson County’s Direct Assistance Program provides one-time, financial assistance to eligible residents who have suffered hardship due to COVID-19. The county will host a program application clinic from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, and applications are being accepted through May 23.

The forums will be held in person and streamed online. Early voting begins May 18.
