The city of Tiffin and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office are working toward full-time law enforcement coverage for the quickly growing city through a new agreement that began this month.

A man was found dead in Lake Macbride after 911 callers reported someone jumped into the lake and hadn’t resurfaced, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Cody Marmet, 30, of Tiffin.

Johnson County Sheriff Brad Kunkel says the electronic monitoring program for pretrial defendants and inmates sentenced to jail time has reduced jail numbers and the program is paying for itself. The inmates sentenced to jail but allowed to be out of custody with a GPS monitor are charged for the monitoring system. The pretrial defendants aren’t charged for the service.

The 36-year-old man was four days into a seven-day sentence when he experienced a “medical emergency.” He was taken to the hospital, and died five days later.

Officials in Johnson County are working on a plan to build a new county jail, after a structural conditions assessment last year found the current facility to be lacking.

One person was killed in a fire at a town house in Tiffin Sunday morning, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

For the first time in 40 years, the Linn County Jail is not housing federal inmates for the U.S. Marshals Service.
