The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose for the first time in five weeks even though the economy and job market have been recovering briskly from the coronavirus pandemic.

Iowa’s unemployment rate rose slightly last month, but state data issued Friday indicated the number of Iowans applying for jobless benefits was 32,200 lower than a year ago when the state was trying to shake off the early economic problems associated with the pandemic.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell for a third straight time last week.

Nationwide jobless claims dropped by 24,000 to 400,000 last week, while Iowa saw decreases in both new and continuing claims.

In Iowa, new claims increased, rising from 1,830 to 2,019. Continuing claims fell, though, from 22,883 to 20,880.
