Brayson Laube of Marion and Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg have been named division boys’ basketball players of the year in the Wamac Conference.

It took until the last week of the regular season for Coe College’s men’s basketball team to clinch the sixth and final spot in the American Rivers Conference Tournament. The Kohawks then won three straight road games over five days to win the tournament and a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1976.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior guard Colby Dolphin has been named the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division boys’ basketball player of the year it has been announced. Kennedy’s Jon McKowen is division coach of the year.

It wasn’t one of those high-flying wins they’ve had a lot this season. A 76-48 Class 4A substate final blowout of North Scott was done in a more methodical way for Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Senior guard Brayson Laube played with a migraine headache through his Marion team’s 73-57 Class 3A substate final win Monday night over Charles City. He gave the Comets even bigger pains with a 37-point night that moves the Wolves back to the state tournament.

Corridor Cross Checks: Tanner MacMaster was playing professional hockey in Sweden, but wasn’t entirely happy with his situation there. His old Quinnipiac teammate Kevin McKernan began selling him on the merits of playing in the ECHL with the Iowa Heartlanders, and now here MacMaster is, making a difference.

There are eight substate final games Tuesday night in Class 4A and one in 3A. Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Linn-Mar and Solon all play for a trip to the state tourney.

The North Linn boys’ basketball team beat Wapsie Valley, 72-51, Saturday night in a Class 1A substate final game to advance to the state tournament for a seventh consecutive year.

Jeff Hrubes has been an assistant coach at Cedar Rapids Kennedy for 25 seasons. He was a starter for the last Cougars team that won a state championship, coached his son at the school, as well as some fathers and their sons. This undefeated Cougars team went to 21-0 with a blowout win over Davenport West in a 4A substate semifinal Friday.

There are eight substate final games Saturday night in Class 1A and 2A, including games involving Gazette-area schools North Linn, MFL MarMac and Monticello.
