Teams to watch
Cedar Rapids Xavier: The Saints return lots of experience from a state qualifying team that finished eighth. Four starters are back, including first-team all-conference performers Grant Allen and Logan Otting. Add in Jacob Schmit and Pranay Monga and Xavier has established scorers. The Saints do have two big holes to fill to round out their lineup. Newcomers will be asked to provide depth. They have put in the work during the summer and are poised for a strong season.
Iowa City High: The Little Hawks are coming off a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division title and a state tournament berth. Four starters are back from a year ago. They have a strong No. 1 in Jack Rogers and a nucleus of athletes who shot 43.09 or better. Nik and Zach Meredith and Drake Obermueller provide the support to put City High in position to recapture last year’s success. Consistency and contributions from newcomers will be key.
Linn-Mar: The Lions are loaded with experience. Five of the top scorers are back from last season. They each have at least five 18-hole rounds, including Christian Cloyd, Max Faulkner, Ben Steenrod and Cam Potter. Dylan Heater started half the season and gives Linn-Mar another golfer with a combined adjusted average under 41.43. Cloyd is coming off a Pribyl title, springboarding him into the varsity season. The Lions could have the balance to contend for the MVC Valley title.
Western Dubuque: Keeping with a recurring theme, the Bobcats also bring back four starters from a team that finished second to City High in the division race. Western Dubuque has first-team all-conference duo Brock Wilson and Tyler Skrtich leading the way. Brayden Webber and Henry Gilbertson round out the returners. The Bobcats will have to rely on some new faces to fill out the lineup but have a solid core to build around in what promises to be a highly-competitive season.
