Iowa high school football rankings: The Gazette’s post-Week 2 poll
Williamsburg takes over the top spot in 3A after a win at Cedar Rapids Xavier; ADM replaces the Saints at No. 1 in 4A

Sep. 4, 2023 11:15 am, Updated: Sep. 5, 2023 8:56 am
One Friday-night outcome created fallout at the top of two different classes in this week’s Gazette state football poll.
The outcome: Williamsburg 21, Cedar Rapids Xavier 20.
The impact: Williamsburg is the new No. 1 in Class 3A, and Adel ADM replaces Xavier atop the 4A list.
The Raiders, who denied Xavier’s two-point conversion with 1:30 remaining to secure a statement win, leapfrogged Mount Vernon (a 33-0 victor against Union Community) in 3A, earning four first-place votes and out-pointing the Mustangs, 58-54, in poll points.
Harlan, Nevada and Webster City hold their spots at 3-4-5.
Xavier’s loss was one of two reasons for a 4A shakeup; former co-No. 2 Lewis Central also lost, 22-20, to Creston.
ADM, which shared the 2-spot with Lewis Central last week, moves to the top shelf, garnering four first-place votes. North Scott is up two spots to No. 2, and Western Dubuque, which visits Xavier this week, climbs three notches to No. 3.
The No. 1 teams in the other five classes remain the same.
Southeast Polk and West Des Moines Dowling remain the class of 5A after taking down Central Iowa suburban counterparts; the Rams rolled at Ankeny, 58-21; the Maroons blanked West Des Moines Valley, 14-0.
Unranked in the preseason poll, Cedar Rapids Prairie is all the way up to No. 3 and plays at Southeast Polk this week. Linn-Mar is fourth, Bettendorf fifth.
Van Meter and Central Lyon-GLR continue to split the 2A first-place votes evenly, with the former maintaining the top spot by a 57-55 margin in poll points. Western Christian, West Lyon and Monticello round out the top five.
Grundy Center is the unanimous leader in 1A. The Spartans have won 15 straight games and have allowed one touchdown or less in 13 of them.
MFL MarMac is second, followed by Underwood, Waterloo Columbus and Avoca AHSTW.
The top teams in Class A and 8-Player cruised to one-sided wins.
West Hancock blistered Belmond-Klemme, 60-0, and remains a comfortable Class A No. 1. Then it’s Lynnville-Sully, Woodbury Central, East Buchanan and Saint Ansgar.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck was a 78-0 winner over Tripoli on Thursday. The Rebels are followed in the 8-Player top five by Winfield-Mount Union, Anita CAM, Lenox and WACO.
