Five weeks later, Williamsburg has returned to the top of the Class 3A football rankings.
On the strength of a 42-13 rout of Solon on Friday — coupled with Humboldt’s upset of Algona — the Raiders reclaimed the 3A No. 1 ranking in this week’s Gazette poll.
The reigning 3A state champion, Williamsburg (6-1) has won five in a row since a Week 2 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Raiders have averaged 52.8 points per game in that span.
Williamsburg faces two more challenges to close the regular season, both on the road — against Grinnell this week, then at Benton Community in Week 9. Both are 5-2, and Benton has joined the 3A rankings this week at No. 9.
The Raiders earned four of six first-place votes, with co-No. 2 Dubuque Wahlert and No. 5 Humboldt grabbing one apiece.
Wahlert shares the No. 2 slot with Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Those are the only two unbeatens in 3A. Mount Vernon is No. 4, followed by Humboldt and Algona.
The top of the other six classes are unchanged.
In 5A, West Des Moines Valley maintains a 56-55 edge on West Des Moines Dowling in poll points. Dowling received four first-place votes, Valley two.
The last 5A unbeaten, Bettendorf is No. 3, followed by Pleasant Valley and Ankeny Centennial.
Linn-Mar, Iowa City Liberty and Iowa City High are 7-8-9. City High has won five straight games after an 0-2 start.
Lewis Central still has a commanding lead in 4A, though No. 2 Pella wrested away one of the Titans’ first-place votes. North Polk, Decorah and Adel ADM round out the top five, with Xavier at No. 6.
The top seven are the same this week in 2A. West Lyon is on top, followed by Monroe PCM, Spirit Lake, Van Meter and Carroll Kuemper.
Class 1A No. 1 Grundy Center extended its winning streak to 33 with a 41-13 victory over Alburnett. Wilton is No. 2 heading into a showdown with No. 9 Iowa City Regina. Dike-New Hartford and Emmetsburg share the No. 3 spot, then it’s South Hardin at No. 5.
Class A saw some significant movement in its second five, but West Hancock, Guthrie Center ACGC and Saint Ansgar remain the top three. Lisbon and Tri-Center are tied for fourth.
The top six in 8-Player all are 7-0. Remsen St. Mary’s in on top, followed by Algona Garrigan, Don Bosco, Lenox, Audubon and Iowa Valley.
