Here’s our Week 5 roundup with Iowa high school football scores, stats and complete Gazette-area coverage.
Cedar Rapids Washington 21, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 13
The decisive edge came on the edge.
Explosive if not consistent offensively, Cedar Rapids Washington made enough big plays and toppled previously unbeaten Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 21-13, in an intracity football battle Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
Brock Davis turned a short pass into a long touchdown, then followed it up with an interception deep in Washington territory as the J-Hawks tried to drive for the tying touchdown.
Then Landyn Mitvalsky sewed it up with another pick. As a result, the Warriors (1-4) are on the board with their first victory.
“We didn’t have a great week of practice, but our walk-through Thursday was great, and we played our butts off tonight,” Davis said.
Jefferson (4-1) was the talk of the town for the first month of the season, but penalties (nine, for 95 yards) and turnovers (three) did the J-Hawks in.
Washington’s speed played a role, too. Moments after Jefferson climbed within 14-7 in the third quarter, Davis took a swing pass from Grady McGuire, evaded a tackle, then cut back and outran everybody for a 65-yard touchdown.

5A No. 7 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 61, Iowa City High 34
You wouldn’t think a game that featured 96 points would be decided up front physically, but this one was, as City High’s quick-tempo and quick-strike offense was countered by a methodical Kennedy approach that produced positive rushing gain after positive gain.
The Cougars dominated time of possession, running for 331 yards. Trevor Scott had 171 yards and a touchdown, Jacob Doyle 164 yards and two TDs.
Both backs (Scott’s a senior and Doyle a junior) run hard, rarely going down after first contact.
“What I saw was it was won in the trenches, and I’ve got to give a shoutout to our O-line,” Doyle said. “They did a great job blocking, our fullbacks did a great job blocking. We couldn’t do it without them.”
The Cougars also got two pick-6s in the second half, one from Owen Anderson, the other from Christian Gasper.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 38, Iowa City Liberty 30
The start for Cedar Rapids Prairie in Friday night's game with Iowa City Liberty was fantastic. At game's end, the Hawks walked off the field as winners, but far from satisfied.
Coach Kyle Knock's team bolted to a 21-0 lead, only to see turnovers and penalties take hold, especially in the second half. In the end, Prairie was able to come away with a 38-30 victory over the Lightning.
"We still have so much to clean up," Knock said. "The first quarter and a half, I thought we played really well. The kids came out on fire and we had so many chances to put it away, but we just didn't have that killer instinct tonight."
What the Hawks did to have to start was Apollo Payne. He hauled in a pair of scoring passes of 39 and 49 yards from quarterback Will Phillips in the first quarter. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound senior finished the night unofficially with seven catches for 139 yards and the two scores.
Casey Kelley was the man who kept Liberty at arm’s length throughout the second half. He scored on runs of 35 and 50 yards in the third quarter, finishing with 209 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Liberty’s Graham Beckman, who threw unofficially for 363 yards, had a pair of second-half TD passes and a pair of two-point runs.

West Delaware 28, Maquoketa 0
West Delaware Coach Doug Winkowitsch appreciated a rare short Friday night.
He was going to make a quick exit, getting ready to attend his son’s wedding Saturday.
Luckily, the weather and the Hawks’ dominant first half allowed for that to happen.
Brent Yonkovic contributed scores on the first three drives and Sawyer Krogmann added a defensive touchdown, while extended weather delays led to a shortened 28-0 victory over Maquoketa at Brown Field. The Hawks have won three straight games, moving to 3-2 this season.
The season’s rough start led to a rebound that has resulted in routs, posting 112 points in the last three weeks.
“We’re healthy,” Winkowitsch said. “We have some guys back. We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now. They guys continue to work hard and we create some depth.
“Early on we had a lot of guys going both ways. We’re getting to a better number there. They are continuing to improve.”
Despite playing just two quarters in constant rain, the Hawks produced touchdowns on their first three possessions. Brent Yonkovic had his hands in each score. He capped the opening 70-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. The next drive spanned 68 yards on 11 plays, concluding with a 3-yard Yonkovic run and a 14-0 lead with 1:18 to go in the first quarter.

5A No. 8 Ankeny 48, Iowa City West 21
Sitting at .500, both Ankeny and Iowa City West entered Friday’s contest on the outside looking in to Class 5A’s RPI top 16.
Propelled by running-back duo, Daniel Larmie and Caden Henkes, No. 8 Ankeny (3-2) was the team to boost its playoff hopes, knocking off the Trojans, 48-21.
“We felt our boys took the next step tonight,” Ankeny Coach Jeffrey Bauer said. “We made some mistakes on offense and defense, but overall we came back and answered the call.
“We played our most complete game of the year so far.”
West came out of the locker room hot as the offense orchestrated an opening nine-play, 59-yard drive capped by a 1-yard Jack Wallace TD.
Ankeny shut it down from there.
The Hawks scored 20 unanswered points with touchdowns from Andrew Brandhorst, Henkes and Larmie to make it a 48-14 game with 6:53 remaining.

Cedar Falls 33, Linn-Mar 21
Opportunistic defense and turnovers ruled the day as the Tigers dealt the Lions a third straight loss.
The Lions (2-3) and Tigers (3-2) combined for three fumbles, four interceptions and two turnovers on downs during the contest.
The Lions struck first as they marched down field on their opening drive behind the physical running of Tyree Alons. The junior’s powerful running paid off when he took a second-and-5 carry 20 yards for the opening touchdown.
