HACAP Food Reservoir’s 20th Annual Eastern Iowa Freedom from Hunger Food & Fund Drive will kick off today and run through the end of September, collecting donations both online and in person for the nearly 40,000 in the community who struggle with food security

HACAP Food Reservoir has partnered with area health care providers to launch Food is Medicine, a program that screens for food insecurity and provides immediate assistance to patients in need.

The organization is looking for volunteers to bolster their local food rescue operations and tackle summer produce initiatives. Volunteers transport over 40,000 lbs. of food weekly to agencies throughout Johnson County that serve food-insecure populations.

The $1 million Cultivate Hope Corner Store, operated by nonprofit Matthew 25 at 604 Ellis Blvd. NW, has opened with a focus on reduced-cost, healthy food in Time Check. Its mission is to educate residents on nutrition and promote food access.

Every dollar donated will enable the CommUnity Food Bank to purchase five pounds of food. Each year, this event raises enough funding to stock the shelves for nearly six months. Registration is online and ends today.

Johnson County is accepting applications from area nonprofit and charitable organizations that provide services to reduce food insecurity and improve access to healthy food for residents in the community. Priority will be given to applications that serve households in or near food deserts, individuals who lack access to transportation, and homebound residents.

On Friday, Iowa ended participation in a federal program that offered households nationwide the maximum benefit available under SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Local food pantries are preparing for a spike in demand.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity and Linn County families grapple with recovery from the 2020 derecho, Feed Iowa First expanded equitable access to land for farming as well as distribution of healthy food.

Together We Achieve’s next drive through food box giveaway event is scheduled for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hawkeye Downs. This is a first-come, first-served event and no registration is required.
