Modern technology delivers historic nuggets

Over the past few decades, green energy projects have surged in Iowa. And bolstered by federal funding, the future of clean energy looks brighter than ever in the Hawkeye State. But it needs more workers. That’s where registered apprenticeship programs and their “earn while you learn” models come into play.

A judge has ruled against Palo-area residents who filed a lawsuit last year opposing rezoning to allow two industrial-scale solar projects to be built near the former Duane Arnold Energy Center.

The 11 plaintiffs argue the solar ordinance, which was approved by the supervisors in September, constitutes “spot zoning.”

The Linn County Board of Supervisors’ first consideration of a rezoning request for the Duane Arnold Solar projects near Palo will take place on Monday.

The layoffs in May are part of decommissioning plan

Alliant Energy plans Tuesday to file a proposal with the Iowa Utilities Board to buy a large-scale solar project near Palo from NextEra Energy Resources and further develop that project into the state’s largest solar and battery storage facility.

Scheduled to be decommissioned Oct. 30, 2020, the plant did not restart after the Aug. 10, 2020, derecho caused “extensive” damage to the facility’s cooling towers, according to NextEra Energy Resources, the plants owner.

NextEra Energy, owner of the decommissioned nuclear power plant in Palo, has said it will donate 144 Whelen outdoor sirens, worth a total $1 million, to the Linn County Emergency Management Agency. Now county is figuring out the cost to maintain them.
