Republican former President Donald Trump’s announced launch of a third White House run received a muted response from Iowa Republicans Wednesday, including from those whom Trump backed in last week’s midterm elections.

Tuesday night’s announcement comes just a week after an underwhelming midterm showing for Republicans.

The former president is still popular with the GOP base. But other Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, are taking increasingly public steps toward campaigns of their own, raising the prospect that Trump will have to navigate a competitive GOP primary. He’s also launching his candidacy amid a series of escalating criminal investigations, including several that could lead to indictments.

Trump's rally came as the former president appears poised to launch a 2024 White House bid once the midterms have concluded. "In order to make our country very successful, and safe and glorious, I will very, very, very probably do it again," he said.
