Victims in Monday night shooting in Cedar Rapids identified

CEDAR RAPIDS — A bullet grazed a Cedar Rapids man's scalp and another hit a Texas man's leg in Monday night's shooting in southwest Cedar Rapids.

However, public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said both men suffered only minor injuries.

'They were only considered minor injuries,' he said. 'Officers thought they would probably be discharged (Monday) night.'

Police are still investigating Monday night's shooting — the 66th in the city this year.

Officers were called to the 4100 block of Wilson Avenue SW at 6:31 p.m. for a reported shooting. While police were investigating the shooting, two men, 23-year-old Delmos Scott of Cedar Rapids, and 30-year-old Patrick Richmond of Temple, Texas, appeared at area hospitals. Police said Scott went to Mercy Medical Center and received treatment for a superficial graze wound to his scalp. Richmond arrived at St. Luke's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Police learned from witnesses that two vehicles were involved in the shooting, with occupants of the two vehicles exchanging gunfire with each other. Buelow said Scott was in one of the vehicles, whereas Richmond was on foot.

'Richmond may just have been in the wrong place at the wrong time,' he said. 'He was on foot and was hit by one of the shots fired.'

Scott's role in the shooting still is under investigation.

'At this point, he was just identified as a person who was in a vehicle at the scene,' Buelow said.
