Tire tracks lead police to Cedar Rapids bicycle burglary suspect

CEDAR RAPIDS - Mother Nature provided Cedar Rapids police with an assist in a burglary investigation.

Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said officers were called to Hall Bicycle Company, 419 Second Ave. SE, for a break-in that happened around 4:30 a.m. Police said Eddy R. Burgin, 54, broke out the front glass window with a rock and entered the business. He's accused of stealing a Trek bicycle valued at $1,650.

Burgin fled the scene with the bicycle, but officers were able to track his footprints and the distinct tire pattern left by the bike back to Burgin's home at 802 Camburn Court SE. Police arrested Burgin at his home and recovered the stolen bicycle.

Burgin faces charges of third-degree burglary, second-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief.
