South East Junior High student faces weapons charge after threat investigation, confiscation of knives

IOWA CITY - A juvenile faces a weapons charge after administrators investigating a threat made toward the school confiscated knives.

According to the Iowa City Police Department and a letter sent Wednesday afternoon to the families of South East Junior High students, administrators learned about a threat made toward the school by two students. School officials investigated the threat and two knives were taken from one of the students.

Iowa City police were called to the school at 11:12 a.m. and as a result one juvenile was charged with carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor, and released to parents. The responding officers found that there was no 'known credible” threat to staff or students, due to the discovery by school officials.

'We take all potential threats, regardless of intent, very seriously,” said Michelle Cook, South East Junior High principal, in a statement.

Police said the incident remains under investigation.
