Semi truck loses load of corn, results in single car crash

Feb. 16, 2018 6:52 am
CEDAR RAPIDS – A semi crash caused a corn spill and a subsequent single-vehicle crash on Highway 30 early Friday morning.
According to the Linn County Sheriff's Office, deputies, Mount Vernon police and fire and the Mount Vernon/Lisbon Ambulance service responded to two single-vehicle crashes on Highway 30 just west of Highway 13 at 2:36 a.m. Friday.
Authorities said 65-year-old Michael Wolfe, of Manchester, was driving a semi pulling a trailer loaded with corn. The front axle of the semi broke, causing Wolfe to lose control of the vehicle, deputies said. The semi wound up on its side and corn was spilled across the eastbound lanes of Highway 30.
Authorities said 20-year-old Nicole Crane, of Springville, was driving east on Highway 30 and lost control of her vehicle when she drove over the corn-covered roadway. Crane's vehicle spun out, entered the ditch and hit a tree, authorities said. She was taken to Mercy Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Wolfe was uninjured in the crash.
