Police say Iowa City cab driver robbed at gunpoint

May. 5, 2014 10:01 am
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa City Police Department is investigating an early morning taxi cab robbery and trying to determine if it's related to another robbery earlier this month.
Police took a report of a taxi cab robbery at 2:43 a.m. Monday. The victim told police he drove to 1929 F St. at the request of a fare. When the driver arrived at the address, he was allegedly approached by two black men.
Police said one of the men got into the cab and pulled a gun on the driver. The other man pulled a gun on the driver through the window of the cab. The driver handed over cash and the men fled the area in a silver car, police said.
The man who entered the cab was described as being skinny, in his early 20s and wearing a dark hoodie and stocking cap. The second man was also described as being in his early 20s and wearing a stocking cap, but with a more athletic build.
Police are exploring whether this robbery is connected to a robbery reported to police on May 3. That robbery is alleged to have occurred near Muscatine and Seventh avenues, which is a short distance away from the location of Monday's robbery.
Anyone with information on the two robberies is asked to call Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS.
