Police say Coralville man sold drugs to undercover officers

CORALVILLE - A Coralville man faces numerous charges after allegedly selling drugs to undercover officers earlier this year.

According to Johnson County Sheriff's Office criminal complaints, on February 10, 21-year-old Dominic S. Magalhaes met with a detective with the county's drug task force. The detective was working undercover.

Police said Magalhaes sold the detective one gram of MDMA - also known as Molly or Ecstasy - in exchange for $150.

Magalhaes met with an undercover detective again on March 14. Police said the detective and Magalhaes had made arrangements to trade 3.5 grams of cocaine for 3 grams of DMT, a hallucinogenic drug. After giving the detective the bag of cocaine, Magalhaes was taken into custody, according to criminal complaints.

Following the exchange, task force members executed a narcotics search warrant at Magalhaes' residence in Coralville. Police said they found a vial of cocaine, a baggie with marijuana residue and a plastic container containing a wax substance later determined to be marijuana.

Magalhaes was arrested Tuesday night and faces two counts of controlled substance violation, a Class C felony; possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. The Class C felonies each carry a potential 10-year prison sentence, a serious misdemeanor is punishable by up to a year in jail and a simple misdemeanor is punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
