Iowa City women accused of breaking into University of Iowa dorm

IOWA CITY - Two Iowa City women are accused of breaking into a University of Iowa dorm room and stealing items.

According to UI police criminal complaints, at 9:45 p.m. Feb. 8, 21-year-old Chanel L. Terpstra and 19-year-old Madeline P. Wise entered a room in Catlett Hall, 350 N. Madison St. Police said Terpstra stole $1,310 worth of clothing and shoes, put them in a suitcase and attempted to leave the residence hall. Wise took $25 cash and an Illinois driver's license, police said.

The women were stopped by a residence staff member as they were leaving the building, police said. Staff recovered the clothing and shoes Terpstra had taken from the dorm room and she admitted going into the room with the intent to steal property, police said.

The cash and driver's license were not initially recovered, but Wise later returned the stolen items to the UI police department, police said.

Terpstra and Wise, both UI students, were both arrested and each face one count of third-degree burglary, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
