CEDAR RAPIDS - A federal inmate who escaped from a residential facility last year will serve another 18 months in custody.
Gabriel Mangum, 41, of Iowa City, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison during a plea hearing on Monday.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa, Mangum admitted that while he was in the custody of the federal government, he was assigned to the Gerald Hinzman Center in Cedar Rapids. Mangum also admitted to leaving the facility on June 20 to go to work, but did not return. He was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on July 12.
In addition to the 18-month sentence, Mangum also will serve a 3-year supervised release after his prison term.
