Iowa City man accused of receiving $80,000 in fraudulent disability funds

IOWA CITY - An Iowa City man is accused of collecting more than $80,000 in improper disability funds over the course of nearly a decade.

According to a Social Security Administration criminal complaint, 34-year-old Floyd L. Knight collected Supplemental Security Income totaling $81,199.34 from December 2007 through May 2017. However, the Cooperative Disability Investigation unit in Des Moines were notified of 'inconsistencies” between Knight's 'reported level of function” compared with his medical records. Authorities investigated whether Knight was making false statements in order to continue receiving Supplemental Security Income.

As a result of that investigation, authorities learned Knight did not report that he was self-employed, had income from his self-employment and owned numerous vehicles.

'Said information would have placed the defendant over the SSI resource limit,” the criminal complaint states.

As a result of the investigation, Knight faces one count of first-degree theft, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
