CEDAR RAPIDS - Police on Wednesday arrested Angela Beik, the former Linn-Mar High School nurse accused of sexual misconduct with a student, on a charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee.
The offense is a Class D felony, which is punishable by up to five years in prison upon conviction.
Cedar Rapids police began investigating Beik, 46, after receiving reports March 19 that she had sexual intercourse with and received explicit messages from a 16-year-old student.
The ongoing Cedar Rapids police investigation has been in cooperation with Marion police and the Linn County Attorney's Office.
Beik later posted bail, which was set at $10,000, according to jail records. She is scheduled to appear in Linn County Court on April 24.
Beik's conduct with a student came to light when she told two nurses at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital - where she also was employed - about her interactions with the teenager, a court affidavit said.
As mandatory reporters, the nurses reported Beik to the Iowa Department of Human Services and their supervisors.
Beik was placed on administrative leave and then terminated from the hospital, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Beik was fired Monday from her job at the Linn-Mar High School. She began her employment there in August 2016 and was placed on paid leave March 20, Superintendent Quintin Shepherd said in a statement.
According to a search warrant affidavit for her cellphone, Beik told two St. Luke's nurses that she had a 'make out session” with a Linn-Mar student in October 2017 and then had sexual contact with the teenager in March 2018, which she reportedly 'described in great detail.”
Human Services opened an investigation of Beik 'on or about” March 18, according to the affidavit, and Marion police obtained her phone shortly thereafter.
