Fake FBI agent faces witness tampering charge in Iowa City

Apr. 11, 2014 2:35 pm
An Iowa City man arrested last month for robbing a man while posing as an FBI agent is in trouble again, this time for intimidating the victim.
Dwaine A. Toran, 51, was originally arrested in March when Coralville police said he met with a man in a hotel room under the pretenses of arranging a sex act. Police said Toran then posed as an FBI agent and refused to let the man leave the room. Toran took $150 from the man and threatened to arrest and imprison him if the incident was reported.
Police arrested Toran and he was charged with one count of second-degree robbery, a Class C felony.
On Wednesday, the victim of that robbery reported that Toran was following him in his car and yelling at him out the window. Toran allegedly told the man, 'Pull over, I want to talk to you and I'm going to get you.”
The man told police he was in fear for his safety. Toran was arrested again and faces one count of tampering with a witness, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Toran was arrested last year when he allegedly stole tools from a construction area at the Hampton Inn and later returned for breakfast at the hotel.
