CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Linn County Safe Kids Coalition are offering safety tips for trick-or-treaters and drivers in advance of Halloween.
Kids who are trick-or-treating, authorities advise:
' Crossing at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks.
' Walking on sidewalks or paths. When a sidewalk is not present, walk as far left as possible, facing traffic.
' Being alert for cars that are turning or backing up and never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
' Decorating costumes with reflective tap or stickers and use light colors, when possible. Avoid masks in favor of non-toxic face paint and makeup.
' Carrying flashlights or glow sticks.
As for drivers, the police department and Linn County Safe Kids advises:
' Slowing down in residential areas.
' Keeping alert and taking extra time to look for kids at intersections, medians an on curbs.
' Eliminating distractions inside the car, such as talking on the phone or eating.
