The Cornell College men’s and women’s basketball teams both beat Illinois College in a Wednesday night Midwest Conference doubleheader.

The Kohawks defeated the Rams 56-7 in their season opener at Clark Field

A running back by trade, Trenton Barnes provided an instant spark for the Coe run game, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown and helping the Kohawks throttle rival Cornell, 56-7, Saturday at Clark Field.

Cornell College returns four offensive line starters from last season’s 4-6 team. Their shoulder pads are broad enough to carry expectations to lead the way — figuratively and literally — for the Rams and third-year head coach Dan Pifer.

You can take Seth Wing out of Winona State but the school was never out of the baseball coach’s system. When the Warriors needed a new leader for their program, many factors made it the right move for Wing to return.

A new activities is next in the Mount Vernon school district’s 20-year vision, with a new instructional building to follow.
