Here are five Gazette area 2A and 1A Iowa high school softball regional quarterfinal games to watch Wednesday.

A good portion of Willliamsburg’s nucleus is back from its 2023 state softball championship team, and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union took note. Williamsburg is the top-ranked team in the 3A preseason rankings, released Monday afternoon.

The state golf tournaments for all three classes will be held May 20-21 in Ames. The Class 3A state tournament will be at Veenker Memorial Golf Course, 2A will be at Coldwater Links and 1A will be at Ames Golf and Country Club.

Lisbon and Central City played a Class 1A district boys’ basketball game Monday night at Lisbon in which both teams took turns going on offensive runs. In the end, a strong fourth quarter lifted the Lions to a 64-47 victory.

Curt Ritchie of Williamsburg is the area coach of the year.

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.

For No. 6 Central City, the harsh realities of football came to light in Friday night's game with No. 7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The Wildcats lost one of their most versatile players in last week's win over Lansing Kee when Matthew Klostermann went down with a knee injury. That was compounded by the loss of Christoper Greif and Braxton Davis during the team's 36-12 loss to the Rebels in a second-round game.
