Iowa’s secondary will have a “coach on the field” for another season. Defensive back Quinn Schulte will use his extra COVID-19 year of eligibility to spend a sixth season at Iowa, his father told The Gazette on Monday.

Cedar Rapids Washington’s boys’ basketball program graduated virtually all of its top players from last season, with this season’s team filled with very inexperienced varsity players. But those guys have formed a 5-2 record so far, including a 56-51 overtime win Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Cedar Rapids Xavier junior Jack Foster was so unsatisfied with how his first season of varsity went that he devoted more time to clubs and competing in the offseason. He’s reaping the rewards now. Foster won the 126-pound title Saturday at the North Linn Lynx Invitational.

In addition to overall co-players of the year Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg and Preston Ries of Monticello, The Gazette’s 2023 all-area football team is led by offensive player of the year Grant Glausser of Western Dubuque and defensive player of the year Rayce Heitman of Williamsburg. Curt Ritchie of Williamsburg is the area coach of the year.

There have been holiday races, backyard football games and living room scraps. Mikey Ryan honed his competitive edge at home as the youngest of nine athletically gifted siblings. The returning state medalist claimed the 150-pound title at the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday. The Mustangs won the team title.

Linn-Mar’s boys’ basketball team has won its first three games this season, all on the road and by four points or less. That includes Friday night’s come-from-behind 62-59 win at Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Class 4A 11th-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier built an 11-1 lead before Libby Fandel dented the scoring column and went on to defeat Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 56-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Friday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.
