The Cougars’ junior left-hander pitched an inning of relief for his state-leading eighth save of the season, securing a 9-8 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington in the Class 4A Substate 3 first-round game at Mount Mercy’s Plaster Athletic Complex.

Linn-Mar’s Tavian Soppe spent most of the season injured. He was cleared about a week ago and has made an impact in the Lions’ batting order. He had two hits and two RBIs in a sweep over Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the Class 3A and 4A substate pairings that begin July 11. The 1A and 2A districts and substates have already been released and start July 5. Here’s some matchups to of Gazette area Iowa High School Baseball teams.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy won last year’s Class 4A state baseball championship, graduating a ton of talent from that team. That made this year’s Cougars a work in progress. But after an 11-5 win Monday night over second-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie, Kennedy has won six games in a row and 10 of 11.
