Isabelle Gasper may be a freshman at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, but she’s no new kid on the block when it comes to wrestling.

Here are 18 Gazette-area individuals to keep an eye on during the 2023-24 Iowa high school boys’ wrestling season.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy won its first 22 games last boys’ basketball season, the first team in school history to sweep the regular season. It was top ranked and top seeded going into the Class 4A state tournament but was upset by Pleasant Valley in the first round. This season’s Cougars should be mighty good, too, with tons of talent and motivation from coming up short a season ago.

These aren’t the only quality Iowa high school boys’ basketball teams in the area this season. But it’s a pretty good start to the list.

Despite leading all Class 3A girls' bowling teams in pins per match last season, Cedar Rapids Kennedy fell short of making it to the state tournament. Now, the Cougars are determined to right the ship.

Linn-Mar hosted Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington in the Metro boys’ swim meet Tuesday night.

Derek Weisskopf of Class 3A state champion Williamsburg and Preston Ries of 2A semifinalist Monticello have been named class captains by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association. The honors were in conjunction with the IPSWA all-state teams, which were voted upon Sunday and released Tuesday.
