Brett Harris is in the middle of his second baseball season since being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. The elite all-state player serves as an emotional and inspirational leader for the two-time defending state champion and Class 3A top-ranked Bobcats.
In a meeting of two highly-ranked teams, Class 3A No. 1 Western Dubuque and 4A second-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy split a Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday night at Herkelman Field in Cedar Rapids.
Western Dubuque’s baseball team won the Class 3A state championship last year, culminating a seven-game win streak at the end of the season. Their coach Casey Bryant decided he wasn’t going to shave until his Bobcats lost again. They won their season-opening double-header Monday night.
Western Dubuque’s offense dictated the outcome in the opener. Iowa City High answered with strong pitching and a better approach at the plate to win Game 2 and earn a split.
Western Dubuque is 14-1 and has steadily climbed to its highest spot in the third installment of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings.
