The Sierra Club of Iowa has asked state regulators to dismiss permit requests related to Summit Carbon Solutions' pipeline expansion plans because the company allegedly acquired land easements too early.

A new permit, issued last week by Iowa regulators, covers the company's initial request to build about 690 miles of pipe in the state. Summit Carbon Solutions is seeking further permits to expand the CO2 pipeline project by more than 350 miles in Iowa.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa Democratic governor, held an “Investing in America” town hall Thursday in North Liberty where he highlighted efforts by President Joe Biden’s administration to create additional income opportunities for producers and entrepreneurs.

The Iowa Utilities Commission granted Summit Carbon Solutions a permit for its carbon dioxide pipeline system -- a move that was expected after the commission gave preliminary approval in June. But the company can’t start construction yet.

The South Dakota Supreme Court said the carbon dioxide pipeline company has not yet shown its project is eligible for eminent domain.

“I would say from the climate standpoint, if we’re not growing ethanol here in the U.S., and that increases the share from Brazil, they will cut down rainforests, and that is not environmentally friendly to do,” the congresswoman said. “So it makes sense in Iowa.”
