With only a few days left for Congress to avert a government shutdown, Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley criticized the move by some House Republicans to hold up government funding over certain policy goals. He said a shutdown would hurt American taxpayers.

The Boards and Commissions Review Committee unanimously approved its recommendations during its final meeting Monday, proposing to eliminate or consolidate 111 of Iowa’s boards and commissions, leaving 145 in place.

The committee will announce its final recommendations in a meeting Monday. The recommendations would need to be approved by the Iowa Legislature and then signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds before taking effect.

Iowa is one of 30 states where the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services determined eligible individuals -- mostly children -- were being disenrolled, even though the states had information indicating they remained eligible.

The governor said in a statement they are optimistic about the treatment he is undergoing.

"It’s never a 'terrible thing' to protect innocent life," the Iowa governor posted on social media.
