Linn-Mar’s Davis Kern, Dubuque Senior’s Jacob Williams are MVC boys’ basketball players of the year

CEDAR RAPIDS — Linn-Mar’s Davis Kern and Dubuque Senior’s Jacob Williams have been named boys’ basketball players of the year in their respective divisions of the Mississippi Valley Conference, it has been announced.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jon McKowen and Cedar Falls’ Ryan Schultz are coaches of the year in the Mississippi and Valley Divisions, respectively.

Valley Division POY Kern is a 6-foot-8 junior who averaged 22.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season. He shot 56.6 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line.

Mississippi Division Player of the Year Williams is a 6-6 senior who averaged 16.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for Senior, which has qualified for the state tournament in Class 4A. He was joined by sophomore teammate Tevin Schultz and Cedar Falls junior Anthony Galvin as unanimous first-team selections in the division.

On the Valley Division side, Kern was joined as a unanimous pick by Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Trey McKowen, Iowa City West junior Jack McCaffery and Western Dubuque senior Kanyon Bryte.
