Tuesday’s Class 3A boys’ state basketball scores
No. 4 Cedar Rapids Xavier 49, Des Moines Hoover 38
Xavier played well, especially on the defensive end, to pick up a 49-38 victory. The Saints (19-6) are in the semifinals for the first time since 2018, when they got there for a fourth consecutive year.
Hoover (15-10) has one tremendous player in senior point guard Chase Henderson, and Xavier did a nice job defending the University of Montana signee. A very nice job.
Henderson could never get going, scoring 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field. He was limited as well by foul trouble all night, and he fouled out in the third quarter.
Joe Bean led Xavier with 15 points, with Aidan Yamilkoski adding 13.

No. 10 Sioux City Heelan 68, No. 5 Marion 59
It didn’t go to overtime, but that was inconsequential.
This one hurt for the Marion Wolves. Again.
Sioux City Heelan scored 29 points in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 68-59 win Tuesday night in a thriller of a Class 3A boys’ state basketball tournament quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena.
Marion (19-6) came into this tournament with high hopes, a repeat qualifier and 3-seed playing well. But the school’s first state tournament win since 1952 remained so frustratingly, agonizingly elusive.
“It’s more than just basketball,” said Marion Coach Pete Messerli. “We’ve been saying it the whole season. It’s a bummer to end this way. We didn’t play our best game tonight.”
Marion led by three points after a quarter, by six at halftime and by one after three. An Alex Mota 3-pointer gave the Wolves a 49-48 lead with 5:15 left.
But Heelan (19-6) rattled off 12 straight points for a 60-49 edge, and that was that.
Brayson Laube finished a brilliant career with 18 points. He became Marion’s all-time career scoring leader earlier in the season.
Heelan’s 6-foot-8 senior Matt Noll was simply too much at times for the Wolves, putting up a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds.

No. 7 North Polk 49, No. 6 Newton 31
North Polk (20-5) stifled Newton, jumping out to a 15-2 second-quarter lead and advancing to the state semifinals for the first time since winning the Class 2A title in 1996.
The Cardinals (18-6) shot 33.3 percent and only had four offensive rebounds while turning it over 17 times.
Reggie Postel put up 21 points for the Comets on 9-for-17 shooting. Jackson Nemmers had 12 points. Caleb Matters led Newton with 11 off the bench.
No. 1 Bondurant-Farrar 81, Algona 52
Class 3A’s last unbeaten led by two after the first quarter, then dominated, including a 28-14 second quarter to go up 44-28 at the half.
Four Bluejays scored in double-figures, led by Cole Miller’s 18 points. Colby Collison had 15 and eight boards, Jaxson Fried 12 and seven, Everett White 10 and seven.
Bondurant-Farrar (24-0) had just four turnovers.
Caden Weber scored 13 points for Algona (17-8).
Tuesday’s Class 2A boys’ state basketball scores
No. 5 Western Christian 69, Monticello 44
Some year. Some year.
Monticello’s boys’ basketball team keeps getting these opportunities, keeps going to the state tournament, eventually the Panthers will get a title. At least get to a championship game.
It just didn’t happen this year. Western Christian (21-3) was too large, too good, and Monti (17-7) missed too many shots in Tuesday afternoon’s Class 2A quarterfinals.
The Wolfpack pulled away in the second half and posted a 69-44 victory to end a good Panthers season. Another good Monticello season.
“We’ve got a lot of good kids coming up, and we’ll just keep battling, keep trying to get back, and keep trying to do our thing,” said Monticello Coach Tim Lambert.

No. 2 Roland-Story 60, Carroll Kuemper 52
Luke Patton totaled 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting and 22 rebounds to lead Roland-Story (25-1) to the semifinals.
Patton and the Norsemen built a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint. They outscored Kuemper (18-7) by a 33-21 margin in the second half to advance after trailing by four at halftime.
Jonovan Wilkinson also had a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.
Carson Kanne led the Knights with 12 points. DJ Vonnahme had 10 and 11 rebounds.
