Girls
5A No. 2 Iowa City High 64, 5A No. 6 Iowa City West 57 (OT)
Freshman Eviyon Richardson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining in overtime, and 5A second-ranked City outlasted No. 6 West, 64-57, in a non-conference battle between the Mississippi Valley Conference rivals at City High.
'It's a big thing,' City High's Paige Rocca said. 'But it's only the first one.'
Richardson entered the game with one basket in the first two games. But it was apparent immediately that Friday was going to be more productive.
Cedar Rapids Xavier 46, Linn-Mar 24
Cedar Rapids Xavier senior Emily Jasper and junior Caitlynn Daniels each scored 10 points as the Class 4A fifth-ranked Saints closed the game with a 19-2 surge and smothered the Lions at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.
'It's just a situation where you want to protect your home floor,' Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said. 'A lot of it is just coming out and playing hard and not giving them a lot of second opportunities in terms of second and third shots. We got fortunate. The lid seemed to be on their basket.'
5A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie 55, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 45.
Cedar Rapids Prairie led all the way but never by a comfortable margin in brushing past Cedar Rapids Kennedy on the road.
The Hawks were ahead after a quarter 15-12, and at halftime 30-20. Kennedy cuts its deficit to as few as six points in the fourth quarter but could never quite get over the hump.
Sarah Schmitt had 21 points to pace No. 9 Prairie (2-2). The Hawks were the only team in this week's IGHSAU rankings with a losing record.
Sidney McCrea added 13 points for the Hawks.
Kennedy fell to 0-5, though this was its closest game.
Sadie Powell and Camryn Ray had 11 points apiece for the Cougars. Madison Friauf added 10 points and Auddie Alepra 10 rebounds.

Boys
Linn-Mar 79, Cedar Rapids Xavier 74 (5OT)
It took a heck of a comeback just to get the game to overtime.
It was a grueling endurance test to get through five of them.
Linn-Mar senior Trey Hutcheson scored a game-high 31 points, all but two after halftime, as the Lions outlasted Cedar Rapids Xavier in five overtime periods, 79-74, in a boys' basketball game last night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.
'I think it really just shows a lot of toughness out of us,' said Hutcheson, an Albany commit. 'That is really the one thing that we have emphasized all week. We have to be the tougher team.'
Cedar Rapids Prairie 54, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 45
Cedar Rapids Prairie spent all night trying to catch Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Once they finally did, you just had that feeling the Hawks were going to win. Which they did.
'The coaching staff was saying that, too,' said Prairie Coach Jeremy Rickertsen, after his team's 54-45 victory in Cougarland. 'It was going to be a methodical game where you were going to have to wear them down.'
Waterloo East 63, Iowa City Liberty 53
Waterloo East won the fourth quarter 22-8 in North Liberty.
Tyrese Nickelson had 34 points to pace East (4-0). Ethan O'Donnell had 16 points and Issac Bender added 12 for Liberty (1-1).
4A No. 1 Iowa City West 66, Iowa City High 36
Patrick McCaffery scored 30 points, and top-ranked West continued its recent dominance of its crosstown rival at Iowa City High.
West (3-0 overall, 1-0 MVC) led from start to finish, breaking it open with an 18-3 run to conclude the first half, giving the Trojans a 31-14 halftime advantage.
McCaffery has been consistently efficient in his first three games, scoring 28, 26 and 30.
Marcus Morgan added 11 points for the Trojans.
Ry Threlkeld-Wiegand paced City High (2-1, 0-1) with seven points.
