CEDAR RAPIDS — It took a heck of a comeback just to get the game to overtime.

It was a grueling endurance test to get through five of them.

Linn-Mar senior Trey Hutcheson scored a game-high 31 points, all but two after halftime, as the Lions outlasted Cedar Rapids Xavier in five overtime periods, 79-74, in a boys’ basketball game Friday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

“I think it really just shows a lot of toughness out of us,” said Hutcheson, an Albany commit. “That is really the one thing that we have emphasized all week. We have to be the tougher team.”

Linn-Mar (1-1) trailed by 13 points after the third quarter, 43-30, but began the fourth with a 10-0 surge and caught the Saints in the final seconds of regulation, 47-47.

“We really just kind of came together and decided we weren’t going to let them punk us anymore,” Hutcheson said. “We were just going to go out and be the tougher team, be the better team and we beat them.”

In each of the first three overtime periods, a Linn-Mar lead slipped away in the waning seconds. Xavier senior Bryson Bastian beat the buzzer with a game-tying 3-point basket at the end of the first overtime, while junior teammate Davis Wagner forced a third extra stanza with his own 3-pointer with 32.8 seconds to go.

With Linn-Mar ahead 66-64 late in the third overtime period, a Tre McCrary bucket with 5.8 seconds left extended the game yet again.

“That’s tough,” Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson said. “It is kind of like getting kicked in the stomach. You think you got it, then all of a sudden, ‘Here we go again.’ The guys looked confident, though.”

With the game tied at 72-72 in the fifth overtime period, Hutcheson drilled a 3-pointer with 1:23 left that gave the Lions the lead for good.

“My defender was right there, a foot off me, looking for me to drive,” Hutcheson said. “Coaches told me whenever I get an opportunity to shoot it. I saw my shot.”

Wagner led Xavier (2-1) with 22 points.
