Iowa boys' basketball substate finals: Monday's scores, stats and more

Monday was set to be the day the Iowa Class 3A boys' state basketball field was set.

Instead, there were substate finals in three classes Monday night with weather altering the schedule, and it will take until at least Tuesday for any of the classes to complete their state tournament qualifiers.

Here's a look at Monday's scores, postponements and area coverage.

Class 3A

Substate 1

FINAL: No. 1 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 50, Spirit Lake 38

Sergeant Bluff-Luton (20-3) got off to a shaky start, falling behind 10-0, but got within 26-24 at halftime and held the Indians (11-13) to 14 second-half points.

Conner Groves led the way with 22 points. The Warriors are state bound for the third straight year.

No. 3 Clear Lake (22-0) vs. Charles City (14-7)

At Mason City

Substate 3

FINAL: West Delaware 66, Davenport Assumption 59

Derek Krogmann was his usual beast self on the interior (27 points, 13 rebounds), but Gavin Soppe and Logan Woellert were the difference makers for the Hawks.

Soppe had a career-high 20 points. Woellert had 12 points, all in the second half as West Delaware (17-6) qualified for the state tournament for a second time in three years.

The teams were tied at 28 at halftime, but West Delaware hit 56 percent of its field-goal attempts in the second half. Assumption finished 15-9.

Substate 4

FINAL: Marion 41, No. 2 Maquoketa 38

Marion by seven with three minutes left, after Maquoketa star A.J. Becker hit huge back-to-back 3-pointers. That's when the Indians ratcheted up the defensive pressure, forced turnovers, and fed Trevor Paulsen offensively inside.

Paulsen scored eight of his 10 points down the stretch, all from the free-throw line. His free throw with 53.3 seconds left gave Marion a 37-36 lead it never relinquished.

Substate 5

FINAL: No. 6 Oskaloosa 58, No. 10 Fairfield 37

Last year's Class 3A state runner-up, the Indians (16-5) are heading back to state. Fairfield ends its season with an 18-4 record.

Substate 6

FINAL: Ballard 73, No. 9 Pella 57

The Bombers (15-9) blitzed the Dutch (17-6) in a rematch of a Dec. 4 game that Pella won 60-53.

Substate 7

No. 7 Norwalk (19-4) vs. No. 8 Gilbert (18-4)

At Dallas Center-Grimes

PPD to 7 p.m. Tuesday

Substate 8

FINAL: Winterset 51, No. 5 Denison-Schleswig 48

Casey Kleemeier drilled a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to give the Huskies (16-6) the upset for a state berth. The Monarchs end 18-5.

Substate 8

FINAL: Rock Valley 61, Ida Grove OABCIG 46

Rock Valley (18-7) closed the first half on a 14-2 run to get within 27-24, then took control in the fourth quarter. OABCIG bows out at 17-5.

The Hawks (19-6) outscored the Wolverines (20-5) 11-5 in the fourth quarter to move on.

Substate 7

FINAL: Council Bluffs St. Albert 58, No. 2 Ankeny Christian 56

Jared Gast hit the go-ahead free throw in the final minute as St. Albert (12-13) handed Ankeny Christian (23-1) its first loss.

The Falcons head to state for the third time in four years.
