CEDAR RAPIDS - When half of the schools in the Metro are rated, that’s good, right?
That’s the case this week in the latest Iowa High School Athletic Association rankings, released Monday.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Prairie all are among the top 10 in Class 4A. Cedar Rapids Xavier in 10th in Class 3A.
There are eight Metro schools with basketball programs, including Cedar Valley Christian.
Prairie (13-4) jump into the rankings for the first time this season after a thrilling double-overtime win over top-ranked Cedar Falls last week, 71-70. The Hawks played Monday night at home against Iowa City High, then have a huge game Friday night at No. 3 Linn-Mar.
The Lions (13-2) have a huge week, period. Before the encounter with Prairie, Linn-Mar plays Tuesday night at third-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
The Cougars (13-2) also play Saturday in the second half of the Crossover Challenge in suburban Des Moines against No. 5 Waukee Northwest (13-3). Yes, there is a ton of good hoops on tap this week.
Despite the setback against Prairie, Cedar Falls (13-2) remained No. 1 in 4A. It has wins this season over Kennedy, Linn-Mar and second-ranked West Des Moines Valley, its other loss coming to Linn-Mar.
Xavier (10-6) lost twice last week but stayed in the 3A poll. The Saints were eighth last week but had to face Kennedy and Dubuque Senior (rated sixth this week).
Decorah (15-1) picked up a nice win this past Saturday over a good Dubuque Wahlert team and stayed at No. 2 in 3A. Clear Lake (15-0) is top ranked in the class, with the remainder of the top 10 being (in order) Decorah, Knoxville, Huxley Ballard and MOC/Floyd Valley.
Iowa City Regina fell out of the top 10 in Class 2A after a Saturday loss to Solon. The top five remained identical, though Orange City Unity Christian and West Lyon switched spots at third and fourth.
Western Christian is your No. 1 team in the class. Cascade (15-2) inched up a spot from eighth to seventh.
In Class 1A, the top five remain the exact same: Bellevue Marquette, Madrid, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn-Remsen-Union, Woodbine and Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center, in that order.
Marquette (18-0) has a big game Friday night at Alburnett, which is 14-3 and a 2A school.
Speaking of the Tri-Rivers Conference, North Linn (16-2) is back in the top 10 at 10th. The Lynx had a 2-0 week that included seeing senior all-state guard Mason Bechen surpass the 1,500-point mark for his career.
Here is this week’s entire poll, with team record and last week’s ranking in parentheses.
