Iowa high school state volleyball tournament: Tuesday's scores, highlights and match recaps

The 2019 Iowa high school state volleyball tournament is here, beginning Tuesday with quarterfinal matches in 5A and 4A at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Class 5A

No. 1 Cedar Falls 3, No. 8 Waukee 2 (25-22, 25-10, 21-25, 24-26, 15-12)

Before the state volleyball tournament, Cedar Falls seniors Akacia Brown and Alayna Yates discussed the oddity that neither had played a five-set match in their entire time with the Tigers.

They got one at the state tournament.

Brown finished the match with a 5A tournament record 37 kills, but Waukee (35-12) became just the third Iowa school to win a set from the Tigers this season.

No. 4 Ankeny 3, No. 5 Council Bluffs Lincoln 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-18)

Only eight teams in Iowa history have reached the state volleyball tournament more times than the Ankeny Hawkettes.

Even with 18 state-qualifier banners to its name, just two players on the 2019 Ankeny team could claim a tournament win. Until now.

The Hawkettes' fortunes were undoubtedly boosted when the administration coaxed Coach Dave Whims out of retirement after three years. Whims ranks second in state history with 1,018 career wins in 35 years, 14 of which were in two combined stints with Ankeny. Whims led Ankeny to the state title match eight times, winning in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009.

No. 7 Pleasant Valley 3, No. 2 Iowa City Liberty 1 (25-17, 25-12, 19-25, 25-20)

The seventh-ranked Spartans blocked and served No. 2 Liberty out of its debut appearance.

'Our girls did a really good job of keeping their composure,' Pleasant Valley Coach Amber Hall said. 'They played with a lot of energy. Those first two sets, I felt we were really dialed in.'

Pleasant Valley (30-5) advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2012. Credit an aggressive serving scheme that netted 12 aces.

No. 3 West Des Moines Valley 3, No. 6 West Des Moines Dowling 1 (25-12, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19)

Take it, the Valley Tigers told themselves. Because nothing will be given.

Mired in a 19-all tie in the fourth set, third-ranked West Des Moines Valley closed out the match with six consecutive points and downed No. 6 West Des Moines Dowling.

'We went to the huddle, and we knew we couldn't expect them to give us anything. We had to earn it,' Valley's Payton Lombardi said. 'We came back out and got it done.'

Class 4A

No. 1 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 3, Glenwood 1 (27-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18)

Only four players on Sergeant Bluff-Luton's volleyball team had any significant varsity playing experience before this season.

Plenty of new faces has yielded zero drop-off. The Warriors are ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, are in the state tournament for the third year in a row and are winning matches while they are there.

The Warriors (35-3) were led by senior outside hitter Kenzie Foley, an all-state selection last year and St. Cloud State commit who posted 27 kills and 21 digs against Glenwood. No player in the 4A bracket has more than Foley's 4.5 kills per set.

No. 5 West Delaware 3, No. 4 Waverly-Shell Rock 1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20)

The West Delaware volleyball offensive attack runs through senior setter Macey Kleitsch.

The two-time Wamac East Player of the Year and Grand View commit makes sure the opponent can't guess where the ball is coming from.

West Delaware (40-5) displayed the type of offensive versatility that makes a team tough to defend this time of year. Senior middle hitter Kinley Kolbet led the Hawks with 11 kills, but three more players — Kleitsch (9), junior outside hitter Ava Hauser (9) and senior outside hitter Allison Collier (7) — accounted for at least seven.

No. 10 Western Dubuque 3, No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier 2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-10)

Fearless and focused, the 10th-ranked Bobcats erased a two-set deficit and knocked off No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier.

An upset? Perhaps. A fluke? No way.

Western Dubuque (23-13) starts three sophomores and two juniors. This is a squad that went to Dubuque Wahlert and knocked off the three-time defending 4A state champions in the regional semifinals.

No. 8 Marion 3, No. 3 North Scott 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15)

Delaney Rice led the Indians with 15 kills.

The pivotal moment came at the end of the second set. Marion had made three consecutive hitting errors, allowing North Scott (28-6) to take a 23-22 advantage.

But freshman Avery Van Hook had a kill to tie it, then the Indians closed the set with back-to-back kills by Kayba Laube.
