Iowa high school football Week 2 roundup: Scores, stats and more

It was a beautiful night for high school football around the state of Iowa. Week 2 brings us more non-district games, including some big matchups between ranked teams.

Here's everything you need to know.

4A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 46, Linn-Mar 7

Kennedy spotted Linn-Mar a 7-0 lead, then held the Lions to 48 yards after the first series and romped to a 46-7 non-district triumph Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Cairron Hendred scored four touchdowns, Kennedy scored 25 points in a bizarre second quarter, and the Cougars set up a showdown with West Des Moines Valley — the likely No. 1 team next week after beating West Des Moines Dowling, 29-22 — next week at Kingston Stadium.

'That's why we put them on the schedule,' White said. 'Let's line up and see what we can do.'

Cedar Rapids Jefferson 23, Muscatine 6

There has been a lot of talk around the Metro area that the Cedar Rapids Jefferson football team is much improved.

The J-Hawks now have a win to show for it.

Jefferson recovered a pair of second-half fumbles, scored 17 fourth-quarter points and won for the first time since Week 5 of last season.

3A No. 5 Solon 48, West Liberty 7

The Solon offense made sure there would be no repeat of last year's narrow escape against West Liberty.

Coach Kevin Miller's team came out and established itself right away on offense, jumping to a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a 48-7 victory at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans, ranked No. 5 in the Gazette/KGYM Class 3A poll, defeated the Class 2A Comets just 7-0 last season.

Miller said his players remembered that battle in preparation for this year's contest, but was quick to add that he wasn't all together pleased with his team despite the final score.

West Delaware 32, Marion 20

The Hawks used a stout defense and an effective rush attack to notch their first victory of the season, beating Marion, 32-20, in a Class 3A non-district prep football game Friday night at Brown Field.

West Delaware (1-1) rebounded from an opening-week loss to Dubuque Wahlert.

'I thought our defense played fantastic,' Hawks Coach Doug Winkowitsch said. 'We have a little more experience there. We have more kids back that had defensive minutes last year and that has helped us build the defense around those guys.'

Springville 57, HLV 26

Quarterback Kyle Koppes threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Spencer DeMean and Jacob Hungate rushed for two TDs each as Springville overwhelmed HLV, 57-26, in an impressive 8-player performance Friday night.

The Orioles are 3-0 and seem to be for real.

'The coaches were telling us that HLV was a Dome contender, a state contender,' Koppes said. 'Obviously, we put it to them pretty well. So I think our goal right now has to be going to state.'

4A No. 3 Cedar Falls 52, Iowa City High 7

A week following a heartbreaking loss to new rival Iowa City Liberty, third-ranked Cedar Falls provided no tonic.

Iowa City High caught a few bad second-quarter breaks and it snowballed into a 52-7 runaway win for the Tigers.

Facing a stern test, City proved capable on the offensive end, racking up 152 yards from scrimmage in the first half. But the quick-strike Tigers were too much to handle.

'Similar to last week, we like some things that we can do offensively,' City High Coach Dan Sabers said. 'Obviously we need to get our defense going. It's something we gotta work on.'

4A No. 6 Bettendorf 42, Iowa City West 15

Bettendorf running back Harrison Bey-Buie was waving bye-bye to the Iowa City West defense all night, leading the Bulldogs to a 42-15 victory over Iowa City West at Trojan Field.

Bey-Buie, a senior, scored three touchdowns and racked up 229 yards on 21 carries.

After the teams poked at each other for much of the first quarter, Bettendorf recovered a West fumble on the Bulldogs' 44-yard line.

That's when Bey-Buie went to work.

He opened the scoring by shredding West's secondary for a 25-yard touchdown run, capping the 66-yard drive to help the Bulldogs take a 7-0 lead. After the Trojans went three-and-out on the next drive, Bey-Buie need only one play — a 61-yard scamper down the visiting sideline — to put the Bulldogs up 14-0.

After intercepting a pass from West quarterback Marcus Morgan, the Bulldogs took to the air for their next score. On the second play of the drive, Joe Bryne floated a pass to receiver A.J. Douglas, who eluded a shoestring tackle attempt to reach the end zone for a 53-yard TD. The Bulldogs added an extra point to make the score 21-0.

West punted on their next drive, and Bey-Buie added a 13-yard touchdown run to push the score to 28-0 with 1:22 left in the second quarter. After another Trojan three-and-out, Bettendorf's Tyler Pate returned a punt 51 yards to set up the Bulldogs deep inside Trojans territory. Bey-Buie finished off the short field with a 4-yard TD run, and Bettendorf was up 35-0 at halftime.

West's offense was unable to find a consistent rhythm all night. Morgan completed 12 out of 25 passes for 185 yards.

The Trojans joined the scoring in the third quarter. Morgan connected with senior receiver Tate Crane on a 78-yard touchdown reception. Later, Morgan found junior Grahm Goering for a 6-yard TD pass. A two-point conversion made the final score 42-15.

4A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie 13, Pleasant Valley 7

It was an offensive shootout last year. The rematch was a defensive tussle.

Cedar Rapids Prairie forced three fumbles, including one in the final two minutes, to stave off Pleasant Valley in a non-district game at Spartan Stadium.

It was a stark contrast from last year's 49-42 win for the Hawks.

The Hawks received a pair of field goals from Karter Griffin in the opening half to snatch a 6-0 lead. PV responded with its only score of the night on the opening possession of the third quarter, a 25-yard touchdown run from quarterback Ryan Mumey.

Prairie (2-0) answered on its ensuing possession with an 80-yard drive. Nick Pearson darted 26 yards for the go-ahead score.

3A No. 2 Cedar Rapids Xavier 36, Decorah 14

own 14-7 at halftime, the Saints scored 29 unanswered points in the second half to win on the road.

Decorah scored on its first possession of the game, a Briggs Duwe 9-yard run.

Xavier scored on its first three possessions of the second half.

Tyler Dupont rushed for 72 yards and completed 12 of 22 passes for 139 yards for the Saints, including a 62-yard TD pass to his twin brother Drew.

Duwe threw for 110 yards and ran for a score for the Vikings (0-2).

Iowa City Regina 56, Anamosa 25

Ashton Cook completed 20 of 21 passes for 288 yards and four touchdowns in the first half as the Regals thumped Anamosa in Iowa City.

Regina (1-1) led 56-7 at halftime.

Cook also rushed for two TD, as did Theo Kolie. Alec Wick was on the receiving end of two of Cooks passing scores, covering 44 and 49 yards.

Christian Steffensmeier scored late for the Raiders (0-2) on a 73-yard pass from Grahm Humpal.

Iowa City Liberty 14, Waterloo East 0

Max Tafolla rushed for 114 yards and Drake Woody passed for 120 and a touchdown as the Lightning won on the road.

Kaleb Williams added 79 rushing yards and a 16-yard TD run for Liberty (2-0). Woody completed 9 of 17 passes.

3A No. 1 Western Dubuque 48, Williamsburg 20

Calvin Harris threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as the Bobcats won at Buchman Field.

Harris broke the Western Dubuque career record for passing completions, yards and touchdowns.

Harris finished the game 16 of 21 for 270 yards.

His 59-yard touchdown pass to Will Burds near the end of the first quarter was the 29th of his two-year career. Burds finished with eight receptions for 135 yards and three touchdowns.

Ben Bryant rushed for 84 yards on 12 carries and had two receptions for 46 yards for Western Dubuque and Jake Hosch ran for 75 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Monticello 34, Dyersville Beckman 33 (OT)

Jeff Carlson's 10-yard pass to Devin Kraus and Carlson's PAT lifted the Panthers at home.

Monticello (2-0) tied the game with 5.1 seconds left in regulation.

Carlson competed 20 of 40 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns.

Evan Wulfekuhle carried 28 times for 184 yards and four touchdowns for the Blazers (1-1).

Independence 61, South Tama 14

Logan Schmitt passed for 263 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 101 and three scores as the Raiders rolled in Tama.

Marcus Beatty added 122 yards on 14 rushes and one TD.

Schmitt completed 16 of 20 passes, connecting with Brady Bartz (41 yards) and Kaleb Lamphier (7) for scores. He scored on runs of 1, 54, 3 and 1.

1A No. 3 West Branch 24, Wapello 7

Gavin Hierseman completed 9 of 15 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears rallied at home.

West Branch (2-0) was down, 7-3, at halftime.

Tanner Lukavsky rushed for 76 yards and Trey Eagle caught three passes for 79 yards, including both TDs from Hierseman.

An offensive line, talented receivers and an experienced quarterback helped the Demons roll at Case Field.

Quarterback Luke Turner found four different receivers for touchdowns and ran for two himself.
